There's a difference between a nerve that's starved and a nerve that's finished. A starved nerve isn't getting what it needs. Blood, oxygen, the things that keep it working. But it's still there. A finished nerve isn't. They feel roughly the same from the inside, which is why symptoms can't tell you which one you have.
